My Top 10 Airplane Essentials

Who else hates flying / airplanes / airports as much as I do? Traveling is fun, the actual traveling part is not. Honestly, I rarely fly anywhere - this past fall I went to Kiawah / Charleston, Winston-Salem, and Connecticut, and I drove to all three places. But, I'm making a quick trip home this weekend for Christmas, so flying is the best option.

I'm only going home for three days and the flight is only an hour and a half max. So, there really shouldn't be any issues...however, I do overpack like it's my job, which is something I am trying to work on but it's not really sticking. Oops.

Since this is the holiday season, and much of the holiday season is traveling to see friends and family, I've created a quick top ten list of my airplane essentials.

Lip Balm First up on my top ten list is lip balm. Balm Dot Com, Rosebud Salve, Lip Conditioner, you name it - you need it, especially when flying. Perfectly portable.

Wrap I freeeeeeeze on airplanes, and rarely take off my coat if I'm traveling in winter. I like to be warm and cozy, and since cuddling up with the stranger next to me is very obviously not an option, I make a little cocoon for myself and sit in antisocial silence until the plane lands. I have a favorite black cashmere oversize wrap, but I can't find it anywhere online. This travel wrap from Tuckernuck comes in four basic colors and seems perfect for keeping traveling comfortable.

Carry On I honestly can't remember the last time I checked a bag...obviously I would love to, considering how much I pack, but I get freaked out about losing my bag, plus waiting at the baggage claim at LaGuardia is ridiculous. I already posted about my fave carry-on bags earlier this fall, but just to recap - how cute is this bag!? I usually bring a hardcase roller bag, and then a jumbo tote bag that can fit the items in this list + my laptop + my camera + anything else I forgot to put in my other bag!

Water Bottle Make sure it's empty when you go through security, but definitely bring a water bottle with you on your flight. It's better than overspending on a jumbo Smart Water bottle!

Eye Mask For longer flights (or even shorter flights tbh) I am not above wearing an eye mask on an airplane. I have this specific eye mask that I wear every night to bed, and it's just muted enough that it wouldn't be distracting or obnoxious on a flight - I mean, I would totally wear this in public, but I don't want to become a meme somewhere.

Heavy Duty Moisturizer I've declared my love for this moisturizer before, and I'll continue to obsess over it in this post - the Clinique Moisture Surge collection is the best. Whether it be the regular moisturzier, the face spray (perfect for flights), or the supercharged concentrate. Flying is very dehydrating, so bringing your most powerful moisturizer is imperative. Other great hydrating products include the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream, and Glossier Super Bounce.

Book I'm not one of those people who can fall asleep before the plane takes off, so I need to stay entertained. Listening to music doesn't really do it for me for the entire flight, and I've been making a conscious effort to read more. I just finished Mindy Kaling's first book and's absolutely hilarious. I either like to read books like that (Chelsea Handler is super funny too), or crazy, Gone Girl-type books. Subtle is not my forte.

Noise Cancelling Headphones If you really think about it, being on an airplane with a screaming child is really good birth control. Save yourself the bad mood and just go ahead and get noise cancelling headphones. There are little earbuds your can pick up, or go straight for the heavy duty Bose headphones

External Battery There's nothing worse than being caught in a place you don't know with a phone that's about to die. To avoid the extra trouble of finding an outlet in an airport, there is the Mophie external battery. I used to have one of the Mophie rechargeable battery cases, and they're actually pretty cool and really helpful in sticky situations.

Makeup Case I prefer to be bare-faced (minus moisturizer) on flights - flying is already bad enough for your skin, and I don't want anything else clogging my pores. Also, if I'm going to be having an eye mask on, I don't want my eye makeup slugged all over my face. Raccoon eyes = big no no. So, I like to pack my makeup bag in my carry-on tote for two reasons. First, if (God forbid) my checked luggage gets lost, I at least have my makeup to keep me sane. Second, when we are close to landing, I can put on my makeup essentials so I don't look like a total zombie post-flight. Also, quick tip - my favorite makeup remover wipes come in a mini pack, which are perfect for traveling!

  1. I agree with all of those! Def don't forget hand sanitizer! Especially around the holidays - I feel like everyone is sick! Also, maybe it's just me, I always bring some kind of snack! It's like a security blanket of knowing I won't starve :)

  2. Great ideas! I am not trying to get sick this time of year!

  3. I'm checking this list next time I go somewhere. My lips seem to get dry after every flight. I need to put a lip balm in my suitcase.
