what to wear + new year's eve

I'm jumping the gun a little bit and going straight to New Year's Eve prep. Fortunately and unfortunately, I believe I've used up all my festive holiday spirit already...and it's only December 23rd. I went to Santacon in NYC a couple weekends ago, and last weekend was my family's holiday party. I've been listening to Christmas music since October, and honestly with the combination of parties and work I am very exhausted.

I also have completely dropped the ball on posting, which I completely apologize here is a what to wear post for New Year's Eve.

Last year, my friends and I went out in Stamford, CT. It was a big deal since we were all finally 21, and could actually go out (legally) to a bar for the holiday. This year it's a bit trickier since all my friends live in different places around the country, and no one really knows what the "cool thing" to do is on NYE.

But, as of yesterday, I've got two celebrations to go to (no idea what my game plan is going to be considering on is in Manhattan and the other in Brooklyn), but let's be real...the fun part is the hair, makeup, and outfit.

I'll get to the hair and makeup in another post next week, but today, here are my favorite options for what to wear on NYE.

Black Jumpsuit I've put this on my what to wear + holiday party post, and I'll put it on this post too. This jumpsuit is literally the best option for dressing up or down, and for a multitude of situations. I'd go with black for this specific occasion.

I am 90% sure I'm wearing booties next Saturday night. They're the most comfortable option, and can be worn with basically anything. I love these leopard print booties with an all black outfit.

Choker THE CHOKER. So ideal for NYE. I'm personally going for a gold layered choker, but literally any kind works.

Clutch / Crossbody Bag Just don't bring anything without a long strap. I always have my black Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac with me, but don't be afraid to be festive with your crossbody as well. This Box Clutch from Revolve is a clutch and crossbody.

Fringe Earrings If you're not wearing a choker, go for statement earrings. I'm trying to be more adventurous with my jewelry choices (it's usually gold hoop earrings or nothing). New Year's resolution?

Leather Jacket You're not going to be wearing a puffy coat out (as sad as that may be - there's nothing worse than being cold when going out), so stick to a leather jacket as your source of warmth.

Romper Yeah it's going to be cold in New York and yeah that's going to suck but I love rompers, especially long sleeve rompers. I originally was going to wear this very tight black dress with cutouts (why not, ya know), but I just found this long sleeve backless romper that's actually perfect for the night! Here's the question: what are y'alls thoughts on tights and rompers? Comment below and let me know!!

Sequined anything Dresses, tops, bodysuits, skirt, pants, LITERALLY ANYTHING. I know it's so cliché to wear sequins on New Year's Eve but whatever they're fun and festive. Don't wear a gold or silver bodycon sequin dress, because absolutely not, but a black shift dress or silver skirt with a high neck bodysuit - much better. I am loving this bustier-inspired bodysuit from House of Harlow...great for the holiday season in general.

What are y'all wearing / doing for New Year's Eve?

what to wear + holiday office party

It's office holiday party time. While I'm 99% sure my own office doesn't have a party, I've been helping my friends out with what to wear to their own.

The goal is to stay appropriate, while still wearing something different than you would actually wear to work.

Here are some of my favorite options for a work Christmas party.

Tuckernuck Peplum Top I've been loving Tuckernuck lately. Definitely for the kids at the preppy table. I think this black peplum top is so chic, especially with huge tassel earrings (Baublebar has them in literally every color). Pair with black leather skinny pants!

J. Crew Plaid Bow-Shoulder Top With black skinny pants? Yes. Great for a messy bun and red lipstick, which leads me to...

Red Lipstick I prefer the Kylie Lip Kit in Mary Jo K, but this Urban Decay Vice Lipstick (shown above) is perfect for the holiday season.

Madewell Velvet Slip Dress Velvet is always good for a holiday party. I am actually wearing a velvet dress to my family's party I've been talking about for weeks! This Madewell version is great to dress up or down, and you'll definitely wear it beyond your office Christmas party.

Club Monaco Jumpsuit For the tall girls. I have been obsessed with Club Monaco lately, and I actually tried this jumpsuit on to see how much I like it. Unfortunately, it's better suited for girls 5'7 and taller (my 5'5 frame was drowned), but SUCH a great pick for a year round jumpsuit.

J. Crew Lace Pencil Skirt My mother is actually wearing this to an office party, with a tartan shirt and pearls. Perfect.

Kendall + Kylie Knotted LBD Honestly really liked Kendall + Kylie's clothing line. I have a dress that's similar to this that I wear to work all the time, but I like this particular dress because of the slit. It's also knee length, which makes it a little less questionable.

Jeffrey Campbell Ankle-Strap Sandals Sandals in December? You're going to be inside, so whatever. These are thick strapped and just amazing in general.

What are y'all wearing to your office holiday party?

beauty + the blunt cut

We're totally in the time of year where I get super bored with my hair and want to just chop it all off.

Two years ago in January I made my millionth "big chop," but since then I've been growing it out. It is currently the longest I've ever had it since 7th grade (so almost 10 years), and don't get me wrong, I like it a lot, I just get so bored, so easily.

So, I've been looking at blunt bob/lob pictures on Pinterest.

I do not like layers. At all. I have too much hair to completely forgo all layers, which is a shame, but the dream would to have a blunt cut.

More realistically for me, I would have a blunt cut at the ends, with invisible layers throughout to lighten the load.

The important thing with a blunt cut is to use the correct products so it doesn't triangle out or become a "mom bob." This is a nod to the post I wrote last year, "Beauty + The Cool Girl Bob." Product is everything with a short cut. You want your hair to be thick and messy, but still manageable and definitely not crunchy.

I love the Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray, and obviously the best texturizing product of all time, the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spay. Bumble and Bumble's Un-Dressing Creme was a favorite when I was figuring out how to work with my ultra-short cut a couple of years ago, and a good curling iron to strategically wave out your hair works wonders.

I've been stalking Anh Co Tran and Kristin Ess' instagrams lately to see if I become particularly inspired. Just makes me want to have an in-house hairstylist.

Unfortunately for me, whenever I cut my hair, I immediately become focused on growing it out again, and never fully enjoy having it being short and swingy and so easy to manage. Will I actually let temptation take over and cut my hair? We shall see. I'm starting a new job in January so it may be time for new job, new year, new haircut!

beauty + my new fave foundation

Fairly certain every woman is constantly on the hunt for the perfect foundation.

I myself am a crazy person and have tried five different kinds since August.

Honestly no shame though, foundation is so tricky. You never know how the color is going to change throughout the day (thanks oxidation), and each person's skin reacts differently to each different formula.

I did my research with this product. I watched YouTube videos, stalked Instagram posts, and read  the comments section on Sephora. I was deciding between this foundation and Born This Way by Too Faced, and after hounding a consultant at Sephora, I chose the Ultra HD Foundation.

The question that the woman at Sephora asked me that really was the deciding factor was, "Are you in a lot of photos?" Considering I'm a 22 year old ex-sorority girl lifestyle blogger, yes.

I recently just took my family Christmas card picture, and I wore this foundation...absolutely unreal how untraceable this product is. It's a tiny bit darker than my skin tone, but blends very well so it's not very noticeable. But, there are like 40 different color choices so it's fairly easy to find one that matches your skin. When I was buying it, I was in a rush, carrying two bags that collectively weigh more than I do, and wearing heels that killed my feet, so I just wanted to get in and out of Sephora as quick as I could.

For daytime, I wear a thin layer to even out my skintone. If I'm going out, I layer it a little bit more. It's medium-coverage, but it doesn't feel heavy in the slightest. One pump of it is enough to have a light layer, which is perfect.

For the time being, this is my new favorite foundation. I change my mind every other week about what products I like and use consistently, so stay tuned if I decide to actually buy the Too Faced foundation as an extra option.

Happy Thursday! It's been INSANE at work this week and honestly I just want to stay home and chill this weekend, but one of my best friends from college is visiting on Friday so I'm staying in the city this weekend. I get out of work in two weeks so I'll get to relax then!

style + holiday sleepwear

I will take any chance I can to wear a pajama set, especially if it's holiday themed. While I will gladly wear plaid pajamas on any given day, this is the time of year that they're more widely accepted as being seasonally appropriate.

Sidenote: although it may seem like I only like black and cheetah print, as all signs point to that if you've been reading my blog consistently, I do love all plaids and tartans.

Festive sleepwear is ideal for the holiday season. Over the past few years, I've worn different themed pajama sets on Christmas morning. I usually go for J. Crew solid sets (like this navy option) or Victoria's secret silk pj's (the best in my opinion), but this year I'm opting for this J. Crew black watch pair.

Goals: find a dark red pajama set (here's looking at you, Victoria's Secret) and a short sleeve / short pair (OBSESSED with this Madewell option). It's probably a crime to show my bare legs considering how deathly pale they are right now (I am this close to getting a spray tan every other week from now until summer), but those pj's look so comfortable and log cabin-chic.

I recently switched out my basic white monogrammed bathrobe for a tartan version (honestly will probably keep it after the holiday season because of how warm and comfortable it is), so I thought I'd include some robe options in this post as well. TBH the Betsy Johnson sweater robe looks like it could be passable as a wrap sweater if paired with leggings and boots.

style + cold weather accessories

I am one of those annoying people who is always cold, and always complains about being cold. I bring a blanket wrap with me to work, I frequently wear my winter coat at my desk, and given the opportunity, I would bring a space heater with me everywhere I go.

Probably not the best idea for me to be staying in the northeast post-grad.

I have literally been so cold at work some days that I wear gloves. Am I overdramatic? Definitely. But there is nothing worse than being miserably cold, in my opinion.

Now that other people in Connecticut and New York City are starting to feel as cold as I normally feel, I'm thinking it's more socially acceptable for me to be wrapped up in every winter accessory possible. The Sunday before Thanksgiving I ran a Turkey Trot in my hometown (Thanksgiving recap post in process, btw), and it was literally 35 degrees outside. I woke up, and there was snow on the ground. Of course, the day before it was 60 freaking degrees outside, but when I decide to actually run a 5K, it's snowing.

However, it made me realize that I own 0 pair of earmuffs, and the only hats I have are the charming Kate Spade hats with "Bah Humbug" or sunglasses printed across the top.

Not really the best for actual outdoor cold-weather experiences.

I used to wear earmuffs all the time in middle school, but considering that's now 8+ years ago, it's probably time to reevaluate and restock.

I love head wraps, and my best friend always wears them and can pull them off, but for some reason my head just looks odd in them. I always try them on, but never end up buying any. It's a shame, really.

I love the J. Crew trapper hat, mostly because it's borderline over-the-top with the shearling and fur. I would totally wear a faux-fur Russian-inspired hat, but I live in CT, not the arctic.

In terms of gloves, I think my mother and I collectively have had a hundred pair of J. Crew gloves and mittens in our lifetimes. They're easy, come in a lot of colors, and J. Crew is always having sales. My favorite option shown above, however, is the pair of Kate Spade mohair mittens. The fur! I actually have a pair of Jack Wills mittens that are unreal they're so warm. I have made it a priority to never lose them because I wouldn't know what to do without them!

Have a great Monday!

health + an ode to kombucha

I have another item to add to my growing list of ridiculous health fads!

I'm currently obsessed with kombucha.

Well, more specifically, Health-Ade Ginger Lemon Kombucha

Let's start at the beginning. Kombucha is fermented tea that's loaded with probiotics made from black tea and sugar. It's basically a bubbly tea that's good for your digestion. I am looking for literally anything to help with my constant upset-stomach, and kombucha definitely helps.

I've talked about Green & Tonic before (my favorite health food and drink store in Fairfield County, CT), and they've recently started selling Health-Ade Kombucha. Being completely honest, this is the one and only kombucha I've tried, so who knows if it's my favorite yet. But, I do know that they have a ginger-lemon kombucha, and ginger is one of my all-time favorite foods. I'm absolutely obsessed.

So obviously, I had to try Health-Ade. Every time I go to G&T (once or twice a week), I pick up some kombucha and I can immediately feel a difference in my stomach. Some of the benefits of the drink are improved digestion, detoxification, weight loss, immune support and increased energy.

I've given up soda, and besides the past few holiday-food-driven days, I eat healthy probably 85% of the time, and Kombucha just adds a little bit more to that. There are some times when I just can't drink another bottle of water, and I need some carbonation. Kombucha is a great alternative!

style + turtleneck bodysuits

It's Turtleneck Tuesday, ladies. I haven't had one of these in a while. I am currently wearing the Tippi Turtleneck Sweater from J. Crew in Sherwood Green, and I am very happy about my movement to promote the turtleneck, considering my subway wasn't working this morning and I had to walk 20 blocks in 30 degree weather. Who needs a scarf when you have a turtleneck?

Anywho, it's occurred to me that keeping shirts tucked is a particularly difficult business. They never want to do what you want them to do. This is where bodysuits come in. They're glorified leotards, and always stay tucked!

My favorite type of bodysuits for winter are, shockingly, turtleneck bodysuits. Perfect for wearing with skirts and leather pants, without the worry.

Just realized that all of the options I gave above are black...but let's be real, everyone should have a black bodysuit. Now you have six different options.

I currently own the Zara Choker Neck Bodysuit, and I'm itching to wear it. It's close enough to being a turtleneck, but you're still able to wear it while going out. Honestly, it is tricky to find a choker neck bodysuit without it plunging to half-way down your stomach. Zara is the best option so far.

The trick is to find a black bodysuit that's not too thin, so that it won't be see-through, but not so thick that it's uncomfortable to wear. I'm still trying to find the one with the perfect balance, so I've decided I'm just going to try all the options in this post until I find the perfect match.

beauty + beautycounter

I recently went to a benefit with my parents (I'm so social!). Add a silent auction with a couple of glasses of wine, and I came home with a complete package of Beautycounter's best-selling skincare products.

For those of you who haven't heard of Beautycounter, here's what you need to know: It is a completely safe beauty and skincare brand that follows a strict "Never List" of questionable or harmful chemicals that they will not put in their products. Literally 1,500 chemicals.

Basically, the United States hasn't passed a major federal law regulating what ingredients can be used in personal care products in almost 80 years. Beautycounter uses their “Never List” as a guideline based on what other countries have banned, as well as through their own personal research. According to their website, “over 80% of the ingredients in their products are organic, natural, or plant-derived.”

style + fave holiday pants

Happy Monday. I know I keep apologizing for not posting, but I actually have been really busy at work and on weekends, and I actually rarely even touch my computer on weekends. However, I only have a two day week because of Thanksgiving (hallelujah) and I really do miss blogging a lot, so get ready for lots of posts for December coming your way!

I also have a career change in December (lol it's been 7 months since graduation and I already have a "career change"), and I'm going to be much closer to home. Literally, in my hometown. I'm actually really happy about it because I can actually have a life outside of work, instead of opening my whole day commuting.

More updates on that later.

My house is officially fully decked out for Christmas (yes, we're aware that Thanksgiving in on Thursday), and I'm getting wayyy deeper into the holiday spirit. Time to bring out the holiday clothes.

I wear so much black on a daily basis that it's really nice to actually spruce up my outfits with a pair of fun pants. Last week I wore these blackwatch jeans from Vineyard Vines and I loooove them. Perfect to pair with a fitted turtleneck (white or black) and black velvet slippers.

I also picked up the tartan pants from Vineyard, but I haven't gotten a chance to wear them yet. They have the coolest embellishment on the pockets. Contender for the upcoming family Christmas party? We shall see.

Of course, we can't have a holiday look without sequins. I prefer black sequins (they're not as in-your-face as other colors), and the option shown above by Splendid is amazing.

Sequin. Sweatpants.

Bless the designer who came up with that idea.

Where do y'all like to find printed and festive pants for the holidays? I'm stocking up!

Have a great day! Before we know it it's going to be Thanksgiving break and there will finally be time to sleep and breathe!

what to wear + thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is official one week away (what) so let's start planning what to wear to all the forced family engagements that will soon take place.

I can't really say anything about "forced" family time on my end, Thanksgiving is literally just my immediate family sitting in the den having a Harry Potter marathon, not eating turkey.

Christmas is our specialty, not Thanksgiving

I tend to stick to the leggings / sweater or pajamas route for Thanksgiving day, but for those of you actually leaving the house, the go-to is a sweater dress. Turtleneck, crew neck, v-neck, any type, just go for the sweater dress. Pair with tights and boots and you're gucci. So easy

Also, hold the judgment for my inclusion of UGGs. You're a damn liar if you don't think they're the most comfortable shoes in the world.

What are y'all doing for Thanksgiving? I'm running a Turkey Trot 5K this Sunday, and plan on not leaving the house Wednesday through Sunday. I mean, there's the Gilmore Girls marathon next Friday (ARE Y'ALL AS EXCITED AS I AM????) so it's the perfect time to just binge and relax.

style + fave holiday skirts

I'm so into the pre-holiday spirit that my house is 60% decorated for Christmas and my family's go-to movies currently are Four Christmases and Home Alone.

It's sad really, but everyone is happier at Christmastime and everything is prettier at Christmastime.

Still going to talk about the holiday party my family is throwing in December. Last week I posted my what to wear guide for holiday parties, and after further deliberation, I've decided that the amazing gold pants from Topshop aren't really so amazing, so I've nixed them from my outfit options list for the event.

Onto the next.

Right now I'm thinking that a black satin bodysuit, like this high-necked version from Zara, a fringey, sparkely skirt, and black opaque tights with black booties. The bodysuit ensures that the top will stay tucked in, and I'm actually not finding the specific dress I want, so I'm resorting to skirts.

I am first to admit I've been a major protestor of skirts...on my body shape, they're not exactly flattering. My large ribs/waist plus the bane of my weight loss existence, my love handles, do not compliment skirts very well. But, I really really want to wear a fringe mini skirt so I'm working my hardest with diet and exercise to overcome my hesitation towards skirts.

(Literally LOL that the election was yesterday and I'm talking about skirts for holiday parties. But y'all aren't here to hear about real world issues, anyway)

So, as shown above, my favorite option is the Anine Bing gold skirt. It's pretty close to perfect. I love the feather skirts from Club Monaco, but I'm not a fan of the thick elastic waistband...not exactly flattering.

Second up is the Jack Wills skirt. Jack Wills is hard to figure out, because their sizing/fit is usually pretty off, but occasionally they come out with real winners. I had a backless daytime LBD from Jack Wills from a few years ago that I literally destroyed I wore it so much. They closed the Jack Wills location closest to me, so I'll have to venture out to another town if I were to try this skirt on, but it's always worth a shot.

Which skirt is your favorite? Happy Wednesday!

style + the easiest fall outfit

shirt (similar) | vest | jeans | boots | sunglasses

Happy Monday. I can honestly say this is the easiest outfit to wear in the fall because it's just following a basic formula.

Plaid shirt + vest + jeans + riding boots

Simple, preppy, comfortable, and there are endless combinations.

I got this plaid shirt from a little boutique in Stamford, CT and it's probably my favorite plaid shirt I own...and I have an outrageous amount. It's incredibly soft, which is the main plus. Otherwise, I like going to J. Crew, Madewell, or LL Bean for plaid shirts.

I've been vest-obsessed for years, but unfortunately don't get the opportunity to wear them very much during the workweek. I love this vest from Vineyard Vines because it's the classic fleece vest that can be worn as activewear or with a casual fall outfit like mine.

Have a great day! I don't have anything exciting going on this week, but I am running a 5K Turkey Trot a week from Sunday, so I've got to step up my workout-game until then!

style + faux fur coats

Thank GOD it's Friday. I haven't slept or relaxed for two weeks now, with homecoming and so many work events this week, and I am counting the minutes until I take the train home and can just lay there.

I also haven't worked out since last Wednesday, which was actually a much needed break. I haven't taken more than two days off in a row since graduation (that makes me tired just thinking about it) and while it has paid off in physical appearance, I am physically exhausted.

That's my little life update.

Onto the next.

Fur outerwear.

Wearing faux fur is an automatic statement, and this cold weather just begs for faux fur to be worn. Can a fur jacket look a little prostitute-y? Oh yeah. But worn correctly (aka with black jeans, black booties, and a black turtleneck), it can be very chic.

Also, just a note: watch the hair and makeup when wearing a fur coat. I personally wouldn't wear a ton of dark eye makeup with messy hair and a leopard coat because it's very "morning-after." Unless you're Kate Moss or Sienna Miller, stay clean and simple.

My favorite option shown above is the Topshop blue-grey fur coat. Obviously I'm a huge fan of leopard coats, and would take any of the choices above, but the grey coat allows for a lot more wear and is very versatile.

My close second favorite is the ASOS leopard swing coat. I love how the leopard print is larger than normal.

Have a wonderful weekend! I have nothing planned but sleep and SoulCycle, so I'm going to prepare a lot of posts for the next few weeks for y'all to enjoy!
