what to wear + day trip to nyc

Today I am heading back into the city to see my little!!!!!!!! She abandoned me to spend a semester in Europe (I hope it was worth it), so finally today is the day that we will be reunited.

The city is always tricky to navigate, especially in the holiday season, especially with what to wear. My mother and I used to take an annual trip to NY before Christmas, and we would always be bundled up because it's usually so cold.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your preference for weather, it's unseasonably warm in the northeast. Supposed to be 60 degrees in the city today, literally what is going on. So, while I might usually be wearing a big coat with full weather-accessory getup (scarf, gloves, hat), I'm probably going to opt for a warm sweater instead of a jacket. Here are some of my favorite options to wear to the city.

The goal is to be comfortable, but still look cute enough for pictures. I know today that there will be a lot of pictures taken. A turtleneck is always a good idea (never hate on the turtleneck), and since it's the holiday season, festive (but not embarrassing) sweaters are fun as well. I typically aim to wear pants and a sweater - much warmer - but I love this sweater dress from BB Dakota to pair with tights.

When I went to the city last week, I wore wedges one day and heeled boots the next. HORRIBLE IDEA. Unless you are skilled in walking long distances in heels, stay far, far away from anything elevated. I am going to be wearing my favorite pair of Tory Burch ankle boots (unfortunately they're unavailable online), but any type of flat, comfortable tall boots are great options, too.

Over the summer, I would bring a small crossbody to the city because I just didn't want to deal with anything more. But, you never know what the weather will be like in December. I'm going to be bringing a tote-size bag tomorrow just in case. It's supposed to rain (ugh) so no sunglasses for me (which hurts, sunglasses are my personal favorite). Will I wear a coat? Can't decide.

I'll have pictures up tomorrow of my adventures with my little in the city!
