style + the printed turtleneck

Happy Turtleneck Tuesday everyone! I'm getting my license picture retaken today (thank the good Lord, there's been a drastic change in my appearance from ages sixteen to almost-twenty two), so fingers crossed it turns out well. Knowing me, I'll probably wear a turtleneck in my picture! One of my favorite t-necks ever is this printed Madewell one that I have on for this post. I wear it at least once a week. Check out more photos after the jump!

beauty + best of eyebrows

Eyebrows are my favorite thing to do when applying my makeup, nowadays. I was recently looking at pictures from last year and I was thrown off because my eyebrows were literally nonexistent. You wouldn't really think such an easy thing to do would make such a difference! I have played around with various eyebrow products and I think I've found my favorites to make my makeup routine complete.

one | two | three | four | five | six

My ultimate favorite product is Gimme Brow by Benefit. At the very least, I'll apply this.

I just got Dipbrow by Anastasia Beverly Hills and I am never turning back. It's super easy to apply and really does last all day long.

A brow powder, like the option shown by Two Faced above, is great if you're trying to make a more natural statement.

I'm not the biggest fan of brow pencils, but if it's by Anastasia it's bound to be amazing.

If you're just going for a natural look, without filling your eyebrows in, a clear brow gel works wonders.

I get my eyebrows waxed probably once every eight to ten weeks (I really don't have unruly brows at all), but a pair of Tweezerman tweezers goes a long way.

lifestyle + christmas recap

Hi everyone! I hope y'alls Christmas was great yesterday. I just finished a workout and it did not go well considering how much I ate and didn't move on Christmas day. Here are a some pictures of my day after the jump!

lifestyle + christmas party recap

Last night my high school friend group and I had a reunion mini-party for Christmas eve-eve. We usually have some kind of reunion around Thanksgiving or Christmas since we all go to different colleges around the country. There's nothing that cures lost time like Chinese food and wine!

what to wear + day trip to nyc

Today I am heading back into the city to see my little!!!!!!!! She abandoned me to spend a semester in Europe (I hope it was worth it), so finally today is the day that we will be reunited.

The city is always tricky to navigate, especially in the holiday season, especially with what to wear. My mother and I used to take an annual trip to NY before Christmas, and we would always be bundled up because it's usually so cold.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your preference for weather, it's unseasonably warm in the northeast. Supposed to be 60 degrees in the city today, literally what is going on. So, while I might usually be wearing a big coat with full weather-accessory getup (scarf, gloves, hat), I'm probably going to opt for a warm sweater instead of a jacket. Here are some of my favorite options to wear to the city.

holidays + favorite christmas movies

T-minus 4 days until Christmas! Now that we're getting so close to the actual day, my family has ramped up the amount of holiday-themed movies we've been watching. Here are my top ten favorite Christmas movies for the season.

how to wear + over the knee boots

If I had to wear a specific type of shoe for the rest of my life, it would be boots. Heeled, flat, wedge, short, tall, I love them all. As of late, I've been really into over the knee boots. They add an instant chic factor to any outfit, whether I'm lounging around my house or going out with friends.

Still on the hunt for a good sweater dress. One of my online obsessions is this turtleneck dress from Revolve. When a hemline is short, the boot length should be high...in my opinion. I actually just bought these boots from ASOS and I am very much enjoying them. Heeled tall boots are really fun and extremely sassy. Channel your inner Gigi Hadid and pair this ensemble with a belted black coat.

An oversize sweater (preferably cable knit), fall-inspired scarf (look at Madewell for the perfect plaid scarf) and comfortable skinny jeans (my favorites are AG or Seven) are a classic fall outfit made even more perfect with a pair of OTK boots. To stray from my black go-to's, I chose a pair of tan Stuart Weitzman suede boots. To me, Stuart Weitzman is the best place for OTK boots. Unfortunately, they're a wee bit pricey, so invest well.

I bought the leather 5050 boots in the beginning of the fall season, and they're truly a pair of shoes to wear for years. They're unexpectedly comfortable, and I actually wear them quite a lot. When I have sorority chapter on Monday nights, I usually pair a skirt/sweater or dress (like this great option from BB Dakota) with the 5050 boots. If it's cold, wear tights, if not, bare legs are fine too.

I wear OTK boots a lot when I'm going to bars. I'm crazy obsessed with ASOS and all their going out tops (actually really eyeing the one shown in the collage above). Keep it cool by wearing black jeans and then spice it up with heeled grey-tan boots. Again with the heel! These are Stuart Weitzman, so quite expensive, but ASOS has a nice alternative as well.

travel + what to do in NYC during the holiday season

9 days until Christmas! I never used to be a big fan of New York City, but in the past year it has actually quite grown on me. From visiting my little many times over the summer, to the recent career trek I went on with my college earlier this week, I've begun to really like the city. Monday and Tuesday I pulled into Grand Central at 6:30 and 7:30 am, respectively, and I absolutely fell in love with NYC in the morning. So much better than when it's too crowded! It did help that it's been unseasonably warm the past couple of days...I love chillier weather but dear Lord when it's freezing and walking around the city, it's miserable

That being said, if y'all have the chance, you must go to New York for the holiday season. Yes tourists are flooding the streets, but everyone is so happy and it's just so pretty! There are definitely some must-see spots to visit during the holiday season.

Rockefeller Center This is a no-brainer. I took the picture shown above yesterday morning (at a lovely 7:45 am) and I think it says it all. HOW PERFECT IS IT? It was great going early because it was me and three other people taking pictures of the tree, instead of the usual hundreds crowding around. If you're looking for the ideal NYC Christmas picture, head to Rock Center. There's also the ice-skating rink and really good shopping around the area.

Rockettes I haven't seen the Christmas show at Radio City since I was eleven, but if you're in town it's an easy festive go-to. The show is always a great time, and it's the perfect Midtown location.

Bryant Park's Winter Village I walked past Bryant Park on Monday but I didn't actually go into this "Winter Village." Right behind the New York Public Library is a huge pop-up ice skating rink, lounge & bar, restaurant, and boutique shopping area just for the holiday season. Also a super easy location to get to!

Times Square This is more applicable when it get's closer to New Year's Eve, but Times Square is a lot of fun if you're really into a lot of people. There is so much going on that it's hard to stay focused, but Times Square is one of the classic NY sites. I actually went to Times Square quite a lot earlier this week, and again, it's much better the earlier you go. I've never seen the ball drop live, however...don't really think I'm up for that.

Window Shopping Not one event, but still interesting all the same. NYC shops go all-out for the holiday season. Check out Tiffany's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales...basically you could walk Madison and Fifth and see really cool Christmas decorations.

I'll be heading back into New York City next Tuesday to do Christmas-themed things with my little. Can't wait!

beauty + fall/winter makeup routine

I really, really enjoy putting on my makeup (I'm frequently doing my friends makeup for events as well) so it's always fun to transition from summer to fall makeup. Here is my current routine!

one | two | three | four | five | six | seven | eight | nine

First, I'll start with the Smashbox Photo Finish Color Correcting Primer. I love it. Sometimes I'll just wear this and no foundation/BB cream. I'll then apply the Garnier BB cream (my absolute favorite). I'm using this instead of a foundation because I miss seeing my freckles! The eye primer I'm using now is Air Patrol by Benefit. I like it, don't love it, so I'm currently in between a couple of eye-priming products. My favorite concealer of the moment is from Maybelline because it's super light and doesn't look cakey at all.

Next is brows. Love doing my eyebrows. It's my new favorite thing to do. I'll fill them in using the color "Tease" from the Naked 2 palette, and then set them with the Gimme Brow gel from Benefit. If I'm wearing eyeshadow, I'll typically stay with the Naked 2 palette. I apply probably 5 layers of mascara (Bad Gal Lash is the best BUT I'm looking for a new mascara so please comment with y'alls favorites!!!), and sometimes I'll wear either black eyeshadow as a liner (from Naked 2), dark green eyeliner from L'Oreal, or brown eyeliner.

I don't really wear blush, just bronzer! I love Sun Bunny from Too Faced. And that's my every day makeup look!

lifestyle + my bedroom

Hello everyone! I am back up North for the next three weeks (half happy cause I can relax, half happy cause I'm dying inside that I have one more semester left of college) and I'm quite excited for Christmas break. I spent a ridiculous amount of time studying for finals, and then spent 10 hours driving home...so I think I'm ready to relax. I plan on spending the next few weeks having a much needed detox.

I haven't had the chance to show y'all my room in Connecticut yet, so here are some pictures!

Check out more pics after the jump!

what to wear + holiday parties

Deepest apologies for not posting in over a week! Between finals, end of the semester parties, and just daily life, I've been pretty booked. I had my last college party of 2015 on Friday night (cue tears) and now I'm just studying for my final exams. Back home on Friday, meaning more free time to write for Whimsical Charm!

Now that it's officially the holiday season, we can start worrying about what to wear to all sorts of holiday parties. I am on the hunt for a New Years Eve dress currently (post in the works), and I'm unsure of how many/what Christmas parties I'll be attending at home. Here are my favorite Christmas-y outfits to wear this season.

one | two | three | four [top, skirt] | five | six

Best to stick to the four main colors: black, gold, red, and green. Darker is better, sequins are everything, and don't be afraid to throw on some tights.

lifestyle + thanksgiving recap

Yesterday was a very relaxing (albeit weight-gaining) Thanksgiving! It was just my immediate family for the occasion, but we had a huge dinner and spent the day watching fun movies.

For lunch we had a cheese plate and spinach artichoke dip to start off. I'm pretty sure cheese is my favorite food in the world, so I definitely wasn't complaining.

@hanholliday

For dinner we had everything: turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, Boursin potatoes, rolls...I will be dieting for the next few weeks. Regina George put it perfectly when she said, "these sweatpants are all that fit me right now."

3

style + the printed poncho

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I am fairly certain I have worn this poncho at least once a day since I got home on Saturday from school. It's absolutely huge and so cozy.

AREN'T THESE BOOTS THE BEST? Thank you Tory Burch sale. I'm quite happy about them.

Also, I don't know how this happened, but I was featured on the female career site Mogul's Top 30 College Moguls in the US to know about! Pretty cool (and surprising) addition to my Thanksgiving break!

2

style + sweater dresses

one | two | three | four

I am on the hunt for the perfect really short, loose fitting, preferably (cable) knit sweater dress to wear with my 5050 boots. That's very specific. I've found some great options, shown above, I just need to bite the bullet and buy one of them. They're great for class, nice dinners, maybe even going out....that might be pushing it, but the point is that it's really easy to get sick of the jeans and sweater combo, so why not wear a sweater dress?

0

beauty + skin focus

I have officially lost any tan that I acquired over the summer. I can't rely on only freckles and bronzer anymore! It's actually been pretty fun trying out face makeup, since I've never really worn it that much before. Here are my favorite products that I've come across lately.

one | two | three | four | five | six | seven | eight | nine | ten | eleven | twelve

Primer Love love love the Smashbox Color Correcting Primer. Green pigments cover up redness, and I really think it's better than just a plain, colorless primer. For eyes, I like Stay Don't Stray by Benefit. I've used this for years and I can't find anything better! If I'm super lazy, I'll use it as a concealer, too. I also just bought Air Patrol by Benefit and I already love it. It's much lighter than Stay Don't Stray, so it's better for daytime use.

BB Cream If I'm not really feeling a full makeup look, I'll wear BB Cream. My favorite is from Garnier because it's super light and just adds a touch of color. I also really like the BB Cream from Smashbox, but the color I have it for my tan skin so I haven't been able to wear it in a while.

Foundation This has been a series of trial and error. I'm not a huge fan of the completely matte look because it makes me look really fake...like I'm trying to cover up the crazy amount of freckles on my face. I like the Naked Skin Liquid Makeup, but it's not my favorite. Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless is great, but if I want my freckles to show through I won't go for this. I've been wearing Maybelline's Fit Me Dewey and Smooth a lot lately because of exactly what the title promises: it makes your skin dewey and smooth.

Concealer I've used Erase Paste by Benefit for years and I love it! It's thick but really blendable, and stays on really well.

Powder, Bronzer, and Blush I've just discovered translucent power and I'm amazed at what it can do! I opted for the NYX Finishing Powder and I can't complain. My absolute favorite bronzer ever is Too Faced Sun Bunny. It's so pretty, but unfortunately I dropped mine and now it's just a bronze broken-up powder. My favorite blush was a limited edition Chanel color that I'm still obsessed with (and am almost finished with, cue tears), but Rockateur by Benefit is a close second. I don't always wear blush, though!

lifestyle + semi-formal recap

Hey hello hi I apologize for the lack of posts! I would like to say I've been busy but since I got home (way to early) on Saturday morning, I've literally just been sleeping. But, I hope to have some fun posts for the rest of the week!

Friday night was my sorority's semi-formal and I can honestly say it was the best event I have ever been to. It was so much fun, was held at an awesome venue, and I had a great time with my date!

My dress came in the mail on Thursday afternoon (nearly gave me a heart attack) but I was really happy with the result! I thought it was supposed to be sequined but no...it was as if the designers just threw glitter and hoped it would stick. No complaints though, it was really fun to channel my inner Kesha and be a walking cloud of glitter.

I opted for flats because (1) I hate heels, (2) I didn't want to be taller than my date, (3) I would be complaining all night.

Super sad that I have only one week left of actual school for first semester!

what i'm wearing + semi-formal

Tonight is formal!

Finding a dress for formal is always a predicament because I literally always end up hating everything in my closet when it gets close to the actual event. My goal was to find a long sleeve sequin dress that wouldn't cost me a lot of money, so I googled until I could google no more and actually found this dress from Boohoo. Never heard of it? Yeah me neither. I think I actually bought a tacky Christmas sweater from the site my sophomore year but otherwise I had never really looked at it for formal dresses. I'm still iffy about heels (I just hate them and always take them off), but if I do end up wearing them, I'll be wearing my go-to's from Lilly Pulitzer.

what to wear + thanksgiving

I survived Mountain Weekend...and I'm low key depressed it's over. Unfortunately I took a total of two pictures while I was in Gatlinburg, and they were both sub-par, so I won't be doing a post on the weekend's festivities.

However, this week is super fun because formal is on Friday! I'm also leaving for Thanksgiving break early (my classes were cancelled) so I'll be on a flight bright and early Saturday morning - I can promise y'all right now I will not be a happy camper 7 am the morning after formal. I am excited to go home though. I love Thanksgiving food and I'm ready to get off campus again.

Since Thanksgiving break is filled with events like seeing family and meeting up with hometown friends, there are lots of opportunities for pictures and cute outfits. I know that my brother and I have to take our Christmas card picture, meaning I'll definitely need to find something ~fall, fun and flirty~ to wear. Here are some of my favorite outfits for Thanksgiving break.

what to wear + mountain weekend

This weekend I will be out of Winston-Salem and making my way to Gatlinburg, Tennessee...yes, it's mountain weekend. I'm not really sure if this is a tradition only at Wake Forest or not, but every fall, each fraternity (and their dates) takes a trip to various mountain locations for a weekend. This is my third and final year going on Mountain Weekend (sad but true) and I could not be more excited. My two best friends, and other girls from my sorority, are all going to the same frat's MW and it's going to be so freaking fun.

There is kind of a mountain weekend uniform that everyone follows: plaid shirt, bean boots, leggings. If you saw a Wake MW, you would think it's sponsored by L.L. Bean. We're a stereotype of a stereotype.

holidays + my christmas wishlist

I hope y'all have enjoyed my gift guide series! It's actually helped me figure out what I'm getting my friends and family for Christmas....as well as help me come up with things I'm asking for Christmas.

Pure Barre Gift Card Lots of classes for lots of toning in the months before Spring Break.

17th avenue redesign

As y'all have noticed, I decided to update the layout of Whimsical Charm. It's from the amazing webdesign site, 17th Avenue Designs.

I found this designer through Creative Market. It honestly took me like a week to choose my favorite template because all of them are so chic. This is the Ivy theme, and it's great because you can play around with it to make it what you want.

Hope y'all enjoy!

holidays + bf gift guide

Here's the third post for my gift guide series. I do not have a boyfriend, but a lot of my friends/people in general do so it felt necessary to brainstorm some holiday gift ideas for a significant other!

holidays + family gift guide

Round two of my gift guide series. Let's see what I have picked out for mom, dad, brother and sister!

one | two | three | four | five | six | seven | eight | nine

Portable charger Who doesn't need a little extra juice in their iPhone battery?

Teapot and mug set I think these are super cute. My mom loves anything British inspired (if y'all visited our house you would understand), so this little teapot and cup set is perfect!

Home and Garden Books Great to look at, great for decoration.

Ann Mashburn Cuff Bracelet My mom is obsessed with Ann Mashburn and pink is her favorite color!

The Beauty Counter Hand Lotion An alumni of my sorority actually works for the Beauty Counter and stopped by chapter one day to talk about what a great brand it is! Beauty Counter is an 100% safe, non-toxic cosmetic brand that follows a strict no-use list of various chemicals and hormones.

Stubbs and Wooten Cosmetic Case Perfect little case to put in your purse.

Ann Mashburn Fingerless Gloves My mom owns these in like 4 different colors, so I won't be giving any to her, but winter accessories make a great Christmas gift.

one | two | three | four | five | six | seven

Wallet Everyone needs a good wallet.

Tuckernuck Golf Ball Cufflinks Aren't these fun? They're a little bit more interesting than regular, boring cufflinks.

Vineyard Vines Plaid Belt Seasonally appropriate.

J. Crew Pajama Pants J. Crew and Vineyard Vines are my two favorite places for men's pj pants. Also, buffalo plaid is the best.

Vineyard Vines Tweed Hat A nice alternative for the colder months.

Ice Molds Even though it will probably go in (gross) whiskey, everyone needs an ice-cold drink.

Car Book I know my dad is obsessed with cars, and Ralph Lauren has one of the most impressive car collections in the world!

one | two | three | four | five | six

Barbour Hat Coming from Connecticut, everyone needs a warm, winter hat.

Ralph Lauren Socks I love love love the RL bear, and they have a selection of different bear-themed socks!

Tuckernuck Plaid Tie
A man can never have too many ties.

J. Crew Messenger Bag A little bit classier than the regular backpack.

Fun books My brother is a huge fan of Bill Murray, so this book would be perfect. Urban Outfitters is the hidden gem of random, fun books.

one | two | three | four | five | six | seven | eight

Flash Tats They're still relevant. Save them for when it gets colder!

Oui Oui Oui Tray I think this is adorable. Shopbop has great little gift items, especially little trays to keep on your bedside table.

Stila Lip Gloss Set My lip gloss is cool, my lip gloss be poppin' - Lil Mama

Kate Spade Bracelet Set KS jewelry is really fun and dainty. Good to wear all three, or just one!

Speaker I got a speaker for my birthday last year and it was actually a really great purchase. Comes in handy when you get to college!

Kate Spade Cosmetic Case KS is my favorite place to get cosmetic cases. I have one that's kelly green and cheetah print that I've used for years.

Glitter nail polish Who doesn't like glitter?

Evelyn Henson notebook EH has so many cute and girly notebook covers that are great to give to your sister.

holidays + best friend gift guide

Here is the beginning of my four-day gift guide series! Now that it's November, people are starting to get things ready for the holiday season and I'm so excited. That being said, it's 100% jumping the gun if you have a wreath on your door and listen to Christmas music right now (save that until the day after Thanksgiving please), but getting started on your holiday shopping doesn't hurt. I'm not the best with gift gifting (leave that to my mother) but making this post actually really helped me prepare for the upcoming season. So, this is my gift guide for a best friend!

one | two | three | four | five | six | seven | eight | nine

Kate Spade Glitter Wallet Who doesn't love glitter?

Madewell Earmuffs They're so girly and fun! Plus, no hat hair.

Set of Wine Glasses You can never have too much drinkwear...

J. Crew Cheetah Print Scarf For the girl who loves animal print.

Hanky Panky The best. My friend gave our group of friends each a pair last year and I have to say it's a great little stocking stuffer!

Kate Spade Pink Wristlet My best friend told someone her favorite color was "gold sparkles" so I'm pretty sure she would love this.

J. Crew Socks I didn't really realize that people actually do want socks for Christmas! J. Crew has a bunch of great options.

Jonathan Adler Zebra Dish I have this in gold and I love it. Perfect for holding jewelry on your bedside table.

Pink Champagne Necessary. Save for Christmas Eve or New Years Eve.

health + getting back on track

I always seem to be super good about diet and exercise Sunday through Thursday, but Friday and Saturday are really tricky. Nothing seems to cure a night out better than something full of carbs that's covered in cheese. Whenever I'm feeling pretty crappy about myself, I have some go-to tricks to slim down and feel back to normal. Here are my top five tips!

Drink lots of water Easiest way to kind of cleanse your system. Adding lemon really helps, as well. I have a 27-oz water bottle that I carry around everywhere, and I try to refill it at the very least twice a day.

Eat a healthy breakfast Every morning I go to Starbucks and get their oatmeal with dried fruit and nuts. It fills me up until I'm done with my classes at 1.

Bump up the cardio Running is my go-to exercise when I'm trying to lose weight and tone up. I can usually tell a difference after a couple of days. Kickboxing is also another really good workout to get back on track. And even though this isn't necessarily cardio, hot yoga is so good to sweat out everything and feel better.

Have a salad a day It's an easy way to eat your veggies! We have a salad station on campus that really helps the entire female student body stay healthy.

Move! Having a FitBit really helps me keep moving throughout the day. If you're just laying in your bed watching netflix for hours on end, there's a reason why you don't feel your best! Go for a walk with your friends!

style + turtleneck tuesday

Welcome to the first (of many) Turtleneck Tuesday's. This tradition was started by me and my best friend last year when we came to the realization that turtlenecks are way undervalued...seriously, they're the best and are so stylish.

Today I'm just showing y'all some of my favorite turtleneck options. As someone who has more than too many in my own collection, I have my go-to places to shop for t-necks.

one | two | three | four | five | six | seven

First and foremost, Madewell is bae. My favorite turtlenecks have come from there. I have number two (shown above) in two colors, as well as a lot of styles from last year. They have a lot of nice neutral colors that will go with literally everything. Also, Madewell tends to have them be shorter in the front than the back, which I like.

Second, J. Crew and Abercrombie & Fitch are my runner ups. I have been shopping at J. Crew for over ten years and they (usually) don't disappoint with their basics. They have really nice chunky cableknit turtlenecks that are uber preppy and perfect for the cold weather. Abercrombie is my new obsession, and I actually have option number five shown above. Honestly one of the most comfortable and chic turtlenecks I own. I wore it with leather leggings and booties, which was super fun.

Turtleneck ponchos are the perfect Sunday brunch top. You can wear them with leggings, boots and a top knot and still look great. Anthropologie has a really cute option (number one) and of course Revolve is stocked with a ton of my favorites. Free People is a bit iffy with me, considering their clothes aren't super well made and can be unflattering a lot of the time, but they have a really nice fitted turtleneck (number six). It's a great basic and layering piece that's better for when wearing skirts.
